To This Day...

My latest completed art journal page is a response to the following
spoken poetry piece by Shane Koyczan entitled "To This Day."
I know it is long (about 8 minutes), but please,
find the time to watch this, especially if you have
kids, grandkids, or have ever been a victim of bullying
(or know someone who has.)
More than once I got chills watching and listening to this.
It is true spoken art and the videography and graphics are phenomenal.

My 13 year old daughter was required to watch this in her art class
and then asked to do an artistic response to it.
She came home touched by the video and said it was one
of the first times you could hear a pin drop in the class.
The kids were genuinely moved and engaged by this art.
She wanted to share it with me
(that is how much it touched her)
and I am so glad she did.
She encouraged me to respond artistically to it, so I did.

I challenge each of you to respond to this video as well in your own artistic way.
It can be a written response,
a photographic response,
a mixed media response,
a drawing,
a painting,
anything.
Challenge your kids too.
See what they come up with.

The sky is the limit and there is no right answer.
If you take the challenge,
please share and let me know.
Also post the video with it so we can continue to pass on the word
about the horrible effects of bullying.

You can read more about the To This Day Project
and also read all the words to the poem here.

Hugs to all in friendship.

  4. Wonderful message and art, but it seems a bit dark and heavy for 13 year olds, but then what do I know, I don't have a 13 year old! I guess I'm basing it on how I would have reacted when I was thirteen. I think I would have been scared, probably from the music and the guy's voice, but probably 13 year olds nowadays are much more mature.
